On 3 January 2026, Denmark received a high pressure from Arctic Regions north of Scandinavia with day and night temperatures of minus 5-20 degrees. The following 10 days it snowed with 5-30 cm snow layer with temperatures minus 5-20 degrees all over Denmark.
I live all year round in my 86 m2 summerhouse in Melby North Sealand since 2012. My neighborhood, “Præstelodden”, is dominated by summerhouses with gardens, trees and 20-30 m high hills surrounded by beautiful landscapes of forets, fields and lakes.
On Saturday 10. January 2026 I decided to experience Lake Arresø, where Ramløse river run into the lake and visit to Bækkekrog at the border of Lake Arresø with a magnificent view to the lake.

At 10.30 am I drive from my home in Melby, North Sealand 6 km via Nyvej with on my left hand Asserbo- and Tisvilde plantations as neighbor to Frederiksværkvej (main road nr. 205).
I follow Frederiksværkvej in direction Ramløse 2 km and just 200 m after passing Bækkebrovej (road nr. 237) I park my car close to Ramløse River running from north to south in a pipeline under Frederiksværkvej on its way to enter Lake Arresø.

Ramløse River drain water from a former catchment area “Ellemosen and Holløse Bredning”, which since 2000 has been established as a big open lake south of Tibirke Hills.
Laker Arresø, Holløse Bredning and Ellemosen are a Nature Protection Area “Natura 2000” mainly to protect flora and fauna. The area is a part of “National Parc the Kings North Sealand West” with many marked walk-and bicycle routes open for public.
Lake Arresø is the biggest lake in Denmark with a size of 40 km2, depth of water 4-6 m and receive freshwater from a area of 250 km2 size of agricultural fields – at north “Sandet” and Tisvilde Hegn, at east as distance to Gribskov Forest and in south to villages Ølsted and Skævinge.
After the danish Ice Age 10.000 b. Kr. Lake Arresø was a fjord (bay) with water connection in direction north to Kattegat Sea .
Later in danish Stone Age 4-6000 b. Kr. the land raised between the fjord and Kattegat (areas called “Sandet”, Asserbo forest, Tisvilde Hegn and Melby Overdrev) and Lake Arresø arise as a freshwater lake.
Lake Arresø receive freshwater from many rivers among other Pøle River and Ramløse River, which causes floods to surrounding landscapes of fields, stretch of meadow land and forest.
In 1717-19 danish soldiers dig out a 2 km long canal from Lake Arresø to Roskilde Fjord through town Frederiksværk with a fall of 6 m. This canal with a dam regulate the depth of water in Lake Arresø for protection og overflow of its surroundings and the “Big Arresø Kanal” gave water energy and flow to a start of military industrial canon bronzegun production in Frederiksværk since 1756.

From Frederiksværkvej I walk into a grass area and follow a path 200 m alongside Ramløse River to its entrance into Lake Arresø.
My theme on my visit to Lake Arresø is:
“Nature is her paint and brush on life’s giant canvas”.
