Swedish painter Carl Fredrik Hill 1849-1911 – an brilliant exhibition in Nivaagaards Art Museum, Denmark

My 3 best friends invited me to experience the famous swedish painter Carl Fredrik Hill on a exhibition in a danish Art Museum Nivaagaard Malerisamling in North Sealand, Denmark. 

I have never been close to Carl Fredrik Hill´s landscape paintings. For the first time I stand just in front of 40 oil landscape paintings and 47 drawings.  The poetic power of the paintings and drawings filled me with joy, sadness, love and despair. 

How can a young swedish man only 24 years old arrive to France in 1873 and within only 5 years paints about 40-50 excellent oil paintings before he only 28 years old lost his mind and became psychotic in 1878?

How can he be so extremely sensitive to the truth of nature and express oneself with such an open heart in his paintings and loose his gift so quickly?

Its a young painters tragedy! 

Maybe I will find the answer on his exhibition – my first view of landscape painter Carl Fredrik Hill!

Carl Fredrik Hill arrived to Paris from Sweden in november 1873. He studied french painters at Louvre, Luxembourg Palace and art dealers.

He was inspired by french painter Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot 1796 – 1875. He met him personally in 1873-75 and bought this painting from an art dealer:

LUND, SWEDEN 1883-1911:

From 1883 until his dead in 1911 Carl Fredrik Lund stayed in his childhood house in Skomakaregatan, Lund, Sweden. 

In this period 1883-1911 his drawed about 2-3000 drawings inspired from books in his father professor in mathematics Carl Johan Hill (1793-1875) library and from many visits with his family to museums in Copenhagen : Thorvaldsens Museum thorvaldsensmuseum.dk and Statens Museum for Kunst smk.dk.

His mother Charlotte Rudelius (1814-1900) and sister Hedvig (Hedda) 1845-1931) took care of him and gave all what he need of food, clothes and artistic materials through all the 28 years from 1883-1911.

Artistic expressions as music, painting, theater, dance and film creates all kinds of feelings as joy, sadness, happiness, love, loneliness, despair, fellowship and humour in my  body, soul and spirit.

Some artists have such a variety and depths in their artistic expressions, that all my senses become activated with all the above feelings. 

This is what happened  in my entire body, soul and spirit, when I experienced Carl Fredrik Hills 40 paintings and 47 drawings in this exhibition.

It was a heartbreaking experience – so sensitive in his artistic expressions of love, loneliness, despair, anger and frustration.

Sad to know that Carl Fredrik Hill only had 28 years out of his 61 years, where he had focus, energy, reflections and understanding of his own personality with healthy intellectual, will and feelings.

Sad to know that he had a mental breakdown in january 1878 with paranoia and sight- and sounds hallucinations and was hospitalized in the next 5 years between 1878-83.
